Over thirty years ago I first envisioned myself riding bicycle around Europe. It came about shortly after I had finished a ride from Ottawa to the tip of Cape Cod and back. That was in 1985.
Close to the end of a long ride and for a few days after there is an appraisal of what you are doing/done which leads one to say “never again”. It doesn’t last long. After three days of sitting at home one starts looking at the horizon again and wondering what is out there.
The idea of riding around Europe thus came about. I went to the local book store and got a road atlas of Europe. I plotted a path that would wind me through Europe for three months. It was doable and there was nothing in my way.
Then tragedy set in. I got a job. A good paying job. Then more tragedy set it a year later when the job became permanent. My life work balance took a big hit.
In 2012 I cycled across Canada with the help of Cycle Canada and numerous new friends on that ride who helped me make it to the end. One of those friends was from the Netherlands. He went home but would occasionally send me an email asking when I was coming overseas to do some riding. That thirty year old ember was rekindled.
Almost eighteen months ago I made a commitment to ride in Europe. I contacted Cor Provoost and told him that I was coming in the fall of 2017 and where I wanted to go. He took the planning from there. In a few days I will meet up with him and we will do some Riding Around Europe.
A note on this journal:
There is the capacity for me to post photos with the commentary. Don’t expect it. It will get done once I get back home and have time to sift through the photos.
There may be some photos posted to Facebook and there will be a daily photo put up on Instagram. To view the Instagram photos tune in to A
