View from Penang Hill

Leaving Kuala Lumpur, we took a train to Butterworth, Malaysia and then jumped on a ferry to Penang Island. The ferry dropped us in Georgetown, Penang's largest city. When planning our trip, we had considered staying there, but decided after Singapore and KL we would want a break from the big city hustle. So we looked to Air (or Ayer) Itam (or Hitam). Interestingly, it is noted throughout the town in all four combinations!

Immediately upon arriving, we were happy with our choice. Air Itam is a tiny town nestled at the base of about 300° of beautiful mountains. While here, we visited Kek Lok Si, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. We spent 3 hours touring the temple complex, it was absolutely awe-inspiring.

We also hiked a large portion of Penang Hill (calling it a hill would be a huge understatement), and then took a tram the rest of the way up, gorgeous views at the top of much of the island below.

Tomorrow, we make our way to Thailand!
