Barbara & Heather - Croatia & Italy 2017 travel blog

Friday: This morning we left by train for Venice. For two people who do not care for big cities, we found Bologna most enjoyable. It is full of interesting places to visit and see and the city centre is easy to get around on foot (forget the Red Bus!). Many parts of the centre are pedestrian areas beautifully covered porticoes and most vehicles are restricted from coming into the old centre. Bicycles are a bit of a hazard - they ride them with great speed and skill at dodging pedestrians. Our apartment at Al Capello Rosso was just off the main piazza and so within easy reach of everything. We liked the relaxed laid back approach to life of the Bolognese and thoroughly enjoyed the great food available.

The trip to Venice took a pleasant two hours and on arrival it was teeming with people. Getting tickets and finding the right vaporetto took a while and we were late arriving at Rialto Mercato where we were to meet Priscilla's papa. There was some confusion to start with but eventually we found our man who took us just down the street to the apartment. This time there was no lift and we battled up to the second floor with our luggage. After papa left we settled in, went to the co-op for supplies, checked out a restaurant for dinner and caught up on some laundry.

Six o'clock saw us down on the sidewalk of the Grand Canal having aperitif. Just around the corner was Trattoria Alla Madonna where the food was excellent. We shared an entree of sardines and then Heather had Liver Venetian style and I had grilled eel enjoyed with a house white.
