The breathless beauty of Nepal and Japan travel blog

Bye bye Australia

Let the holiday begin.... a short taxi ride to the airport followed by a straightforward check-in. Once we cleared security we made a beeline for the tranquility of the Amercian Express lounge. Comfy lounges and complimentary drinks and food are ours for the next couple of hours as we await the departure of our 21:45 flight to Kathmandu via Guanzhou on China Southern. Flight time nine hours 40 minutes to Guanzhou.

The aircraft was a somewhat noisy A330 and the flight was full with only a handful of westerners. The inflight service was OK, as was the selection of entertainment. I watched Hidden Figures, a gem of a movie and then Room. I can see why Bree Larson won best actress for her role in it. Grae played video games as the sound on his headphones was poor. At Guanzhou we had a layover of three hours before getting on an A319 aircraft. Flight time was four hour 40 min to Kathmandu. We sat on the tarmac for an hour due to air traffic control. It was a fairly empty flight with no individual inflight entertainment. Flying in to Kathmandu it was overcast so we didn't see any mountains.

We filled out our visa on arrival forms and paid US$40 each for a 30 day visa. Outside the airport Grae spotted our hotel pickup's sign welcoming Mr Graeme Harris. A quick drive through the streets of Kathmandu and we reached our hotel. There's no elevator at Hotel Potala so thank goodness the staff carried our suitcases up the five flights of stairs. It was just after midday and we both needed a little lie down once we got to our room.
