the drive through to Musellbrooke

the olive grove

having fun tasting the products

Tuesday 27th Sept - Rylestone to Quirindi via Muswellbrook

This morning has dawned with full sun, no cloud, and only the slightest of breeze. What great promise for today after all the cold weather we have had. We got away at 9 and headed N up Belong Valley Way crossing over the range through a pass from the Belong Valley the the Upper Hunter Valley. From the pass we descended down the next valley beside the rail line and the swollen Goulburn River to Denman (morning tea) and then travelled through the Upper Hunter Valley to a stop at the Pukara Olive Grove Estate where we did some sampling of Olive products. They produce no table olives, they are all crushed and made in oils, vinegars etc - some very nice tastes.

Then on to Muswellbrook where we visited the “most unfriendly info centre” - not the lady we spoke to but the centre as set up by the council. The info centre carpark is not suited for vans, and the info centre is actually a very small office in the council building. Fortunately for the very friendly lady in the unfriendly info centre, she retire this week so will not have to put up with irate travellers any more.

Hunter Belle Cheese factory was our next stop on the outskirts of town where we did some cheese and fudge tasting and made some “splurge” purchases. Sorry folks, I don’t expect it to last till we get home!!!

We finally stopped for the night at 4:45 at Quirindi. The wind which has continued to develop all day is now an icy blast. Let’s hope it abates as we forge further N tomorrow.
