Sunday 25th Sept - Cowra - church and drive
Today we headed off to church with the intention of attending the Salvation army just to be different. The presence of only 3 cars outside 5 mins before service time had us do a rethink and we went down a couple of blocks to the Uniting Church and were made most welcome at their Cafe Church held on one Sunday each month in the hall with a more relaxed style including discussion on questions arising from the talk. Today is Social Justice Sunday.
After church we dropped into the Info Centre and watched the hologram about the breakout from the Cowra POW Camp. Great - not to be missed. After lunch we changed and headed off to see the nearby Wyangala Dam which has been overflowing. Not to be. The road is closed at the Lachlan River where the bridge is still under water so 30km back we went into town and went to the POW camp memorial where in 1944 over 1000 Japanese broke out of the camp in what was in effect a suicide attempt at freedom to avoid the shame of being imprisoned. The wind is now very icy and the temperature is dropping quickly. Despite the wind, we drove up Bellevue Hill Lookout to view Cowra from this good vantage point.
