Wildflowers right along the edge of the cliff.

Another scenic stop along the way.

Sport fishing boat off shore.

It looks like this hawk is about to do some fishing too.

A house nestled among the trees.

Every room with a view.

And then there is camping with a view.

160709 (Ron Writing) We left Garcia River Casino about 10 AM and continued north on Hwy 1 making frequent stops along the way to enjoy the scenery. At Leggett, CA Hwy 1 ends into Hwy 101. We continued north on 101 to a wide turn-off just south of Garberville where we took a break to have dinner. We had just finished dinner and were thinking about just spending the night there when a CHP officer stopped and asked if we were having problems. He said the area was for emergency parking only. So we told him we’d leave in a few minutes which we did. Perhaps the law has recently changed but our understanding of the law and past experience indicates that CA treats these large “turnout” parking areas the same as official rest stops – i.e., motorists are allowed to park and stay for up to 8 hours.

We headed about an hour north on 101 to Loleta, CA and stopped at the Bear River Casino and Hotel. They allow 3 nights of free parking in their upper lot. We got checked-in and parked just before it got dark. It was a long day of driving.
