Our setup at Normanton

The Purple Pub, Normanton

Deserted main street, Normanton. All at rodeo?

Our final get-together with Trudi & Marcel

10/6/2016 Friday

Our last day in Normanton, and it's a much needed 'rest day' - there's not a lot to do after riding the Gulflander to Croydon and fishing at Karumba, and this is very welcome.

I went for a walk and took a photo of the 'famous' Purple Hotel opposite the caravan park. There are 3 hotels in town, and this seems to be the one frequented by the aboriginal population. It's sad to see and hear the young ones leaving anytime after lunch and into the night, often carrying a carton of beer. When I got back just before 9am, Ian was just waking up. Lucky man!

We played cards this morning, much to Trudi and Marcel's delight. Pam & Don presented Marcel & Trudi with an "Aussie" box containing Australian souvenirs, ie cap, towel, etc. This trip has been to celebrate our friendship with our Swiss friends, and reminisce the past 8 years. We've had a lovely 10 days together.

It's a public holiday here today, possibly because of the Rodeo. I imagine that it's a pretty big deal in a town as isolated as this. The only locals we saw - mostly young - were those carrying cartons. Reminds us of Alice Springs. But we haven't seen or heard any fights, which is good. There is a heavy police presence, possibly for the rodeo.

We played cards again this afternoon, and chatted a lot, talking about which way each of us is returning home. This is our last day together, as Marcel and Trudi will leave about 7.30am tomorrow. They plan on being home by Monday.

We hope to leave between 8.30 and 9am.
