On our way to Denali, we stopped in the small town of Nenana...home of the Nenana Ice Classic. The Nenana Ice Classic competition began in 1917 when railroad engineers bet a total of 800 dollars, winner takes all, guessing the exact time (month, day, hour, minute) when ice on the Tanana River would break up. Each year since then, Alaska residents have guessed at the timing of the river breakup. For $2.50, you can place a bet. This year's breakup was April 23rd at 3:39 pm and $300,000.00 was split between 14 winners. We both bought an entry for the 2017 Nenana Ice Classic. Who knows, maybe this time next year, we will hit the jackpot!!

While Fairbanks is all about history, Denali is all about nature. As our bus entered the Denali area, the scenery changed drastically. Suddenly, we were among stunning mountains in every direction. We have a gorgeous view of the Tenana River from our room here at the Denali Princess Lodge. When we open the window of our room, we can hear the river flowing. It is difficult to explain just how amazingly beautiful it is here. Absolutely breathtaking!!!!!

This evening was dinner and a show at the Music of Denali Dinner Theatre. It was a clapping and singing along type show which included Walter Harper - the first Alaska native to set foot on the 20,320 ft. summit of Mt. Denali "the high one".

Looking forward to, hopefully, seeing some wildlife tomorrow!
