Mary's trip to London, Oxford and Berlin travel blog

I got up this morning at 2:30 a.m. and caught my flight to Kansas City. This is where I will be meeting up with the Egyptology group I will be traveling with to London, Oxford and Berlin tomorrow. Even though I haven't had my security interview and fingerprinting (scheduled at PDX in September) my provisional TSA prechecked status got me through the security line quickly in Eugene. It was a very smooth flight to Denver but the Denver to Kansas City flight was almost an hour late. Since I didn't have anyone picking me up it really didn't matter much, though, and actually gave me a chance to have a bite of breakfast. The banana I ate at 3:30 a.m. was long gone! Finally winged off to KC about 10:30 a.m.

I checked into the Hampton Inn near the airport and my room looks out on a very inviting pool but when I called the front desk to check on pool hours I was told the city of KC was so behind in their annual pool inspections that none of their hotels had their pools inspected yet. So, I practiced my German up on Duolingo for a couple of hours then listened to music for a while before catching the shuttle over to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner.

Since we don't have a Ruby Tuesdays in Eugene I had never eaten there before but checked out the menu online and they had a lot of variety so I thought I would give them a try. I decided on a grilled chicken and crab cake combo that was really tasty. Sometimes I have ordered crab cakes at other restaurants and they end up being really bland but Ruby Tuesdays had chopped onion and spices in them so they were really delicious. Their salad bar was really fresh too. They also had some delicious looking desserts, particularly an apple crunch flatbread, but I didn't have any room left.

One of my fellow trip participants is picking me up tomorrow morning at 9:20 a.m. to take me over to the Nelson-Adkins Museum of Art. I'll spend the day photographing their Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Asian antiquities and our Egyptology tour leader will give a tour of the significant Egyptian pieces there. Then its off to London on Monday!
