Plane took off 6 a.m. from Delhi airport for Bangalor where we landed at 8:45. Had breakfast on this Air India flight...totally unexpected, GREAT! Then on the flight to Male, Maldive which took off at ll a.m. and landed at 12:30 we got another complete meal!!
Mari loves this 'seat of your pants' travel with no idea of where to go or stay until you arrive. I, on the other hand, hate it. If it hadn't been that Bon had investigated the Maldives much earlier we would probably ended up in the Male capital with little or no access to snorkeling and costing big $$$.
As it was, thanks to Bon, we knew to catch a ferry for a different island, Magfasin/Maafushi, where a lot of bacckpackers go and prices are a bit more reasonable - still high vs India. Mare wanted to immediately go for a drink rather than find a place to stay - 5:30 p.m.! Bon and I spent next hour walking and checking out accomodations. It's high season so most places are full. Finally, we ended up at Narnia a nice Guest House with nice folks - still $67 U.S. per nite (our most expensive in India was $35 U.S. and that was just one night).
We may not stay here long. I'm looking forward to some snorkeling but we'll see. The sand here is quite granular, painful walking barefoot for my 'lefty', ha!
This island is poised to take off - literally dozens of new accomodations under construction. It is still kind of a backwater - one ferry over at 3 p.m. and return to Male at 7 a.m. daily.
