Monday 26 Oct to Brent and Lydia Stuart ( near Oakey..18ks out of Toowoomba. ) 76ks 4:40ride time. Av 16kph. total ODO now 515km. 5:30 am watched Mr and Mrs Kookaburra up in a huge gum tree, pass a bug between each other many times before one gobbled it up….watched a tiny ant try to drag a dried currant 10 times its own size off the edge of the seat where we had breakfast. We are living in nature. On the road by 7.30, but 50m up road found the general store and had to have coffee to warm us up. .0nly 19C and overcast. Easy rollercoaster ride , horses and cattle running to the roadside fences as we passed by. Poll Hereford stud farms. Bombed along with tailwind sometimes 27kph for 14ks on the A3 to the Cooyar- Oakey hwy, a quiet country road. 25C at 9am and then the flies woke up! Hit a 2km 10% gradient hill , Pete got to top but Nickie pushed the bike last bit. At the top 672m high we had crossed the Great Dividing Range ! A huge roadside sign warned of a $30,000 fine for keeping rabbits. Bad news for magicians, haha . At 24kms, Google directed us ontp King Hills road, gravel and rough…Nickie wasn’t keen,,didn’t want to do any more gravel roads and especially a road with “hills” in the name. .. small farms, ploughed fields, steep ups and lots of horses and cattle but many more flies, so uncomfortable to stop for a drink, they swarm all over.…fast 5km downhill to sealed back country roads, no traffic. 2 lizards crossed in front of us. Into Goombungee, by 11:30 , 50 ks done in 3;10 mins..good riding.!! This wee town looked deserted. ..no one on the streets. Jacarandas and silky oaks line the main street. Citrus trees, stonefruit trees and grass so green it didn’t look real. Sat in shade for a long hour and half lunch. Made good time time 1: 30hr against wind and hills the 26 ks now to brent’s place = 32C now at 2:30pm. Turned into his street and had to do 800m at 15%. What a killer ! Brent and Lydia live on a hill side looking toward Toowoomba. Enormous views, sat on deck watching rain and lightning from 6-10pm. 40mm overnight, first rain for many months. Lydia hand feeds the magpies and butcher birds. Galahs, lorikeets, butcher bird and finches eat from the bird feeders. Frogs living in her goldfish pond croaking day and night.

Tuesday 27 Oct. Into Toowoomba city (pop 100,000) hilly streets like San Francisco..glad not to be biking here. A stroll through the Botanic gardens, most of the flower beds empty now. Huge Queensland Kauri tree. Strangely shaped bottle tree and a very rare dinosaur tree. Spent an hour at the Cobb & Co Museum, the stage coaches and utility carts/carriages. Did you know that the terms dashboard, boot, and back seat driver come from those days? Very interesting was the kiwi guy
