Clayton's Circle the West travel blog

Our wake up call this morning came at 0530 to give us time to put the final items in our bags, have breakfast, and meet our group at 0730.

We met 3 of our group at the pavilion by the end of the runway at the airstrip. The remaining 15 of our group, including my sister, are flying in from Las Vegas. While we were waiting for the airplane, which was over an hour late, we met our trip leaders and started to get to know each other.

After the rest of the group arrived, they had time to stock up on beverages before we headed out to the launch point at Less's Ferry.

Trip leaders RD and Shad gave us the trip overview, safety briefing, and other information. We packed our dry bags and our day bags and prepared to launch our raft for the journey through the canyon. We formed the first of many "fire lines" to get our gear on the raft. After the gear was secured we boarded the raft and picked our locations: the point: 9 seating positions on the front of the raft; the buck board: 6 positions on a shelf looking down on the 6 up front; or the "princess lounge": 2 positions on each side of the raft behind the buck board. As you might expect, the most interesting ride is up front, but we also learned that you got a good ride on the buck board, and a somewhat calmer ride in the lounge.

Our raft pushed off, we passed under the wire that marks mile 0 of the Grand Canyon and we were on our way for 7 days of excitement and spectacular views all to be enjoyed with 20 of our newest friends.

Pictures to follow when we have an internet connection with enough bandwidth.
