Today Larry & I headed out to the Hammel Ranch to enjoy dinner and music while learning about the historic Sidney - Deadwood Stagecoach route! Admission was free, music was provided by the Ramblin' Rangers & the delicious chuchwagon meal was done by Smokin' BBQ, out of Hot Springs. Perhaps some of the best pulled pork we've ever eaten!
Several beautifully restored wagons and stagecoaches were on display up near the chuckwagon/stage. Rick & Peggy Kaan out of Hot Springs brought most of the wagons & a beautiful stagecoach was on display courtesy of Doug Hansen.
This 100+ mile traverse, with 40 wagons and more than 180 horses, is being sponsored by the Days of '76 Museum in Deadwood, SD. The trail ride and wagon train began in the tiny hamlet of Ardmore, near the Nebraska border on August 28. The trip will be taking the travelers from the Nebraska-South Dakota border, north through rolling hills and grasslands, across the Cheyenne River and through the Black Hills, going near locations like Hot Springs, Pringle, Custer, Deerfield Lake, Rochford and Dumont, ending up in historic Deadwood on September 5th.
The nine day trek of teamsters and outriders from 15 states are retracing hoof prints of the Pony Express and the wagon ruts of the countless stagecoaches, freight wagons and travellers from the Union Pacific Railroad hub in Sidney, Nebraska, to the muddy, bloody streets of Deadwood, SD. We found it interesting that the freight wagons shipped over 22 million pounds of freight in 1878 and 1879. Amazing! Old time UPS :)
If you didn't get a chance to make it out today, you can come see the wagon train when they arrive in Custer on Monday afternoon. We understand they will camp out at the Four Mile Old West Town, located 4 miles west of Custer on Hwy 16, Monday & Tuesday. I hope that is correct. You might call to make sure they are not leaving on Tuesday, but I believe they will pull out on Wednesday morning. We're hoping to make it out for a couple of hours too. Four Mile will be a cool location for them! Fun way to spend a few hours :)
