The Icebreaker

August 1

Happy 13th Birthday, Evan! # 13!

Drove into Mackinaw City and walked out on the pier to see the (decommissioned) Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. The ship is huge: 290' x 74' beam, but with the shallow draft characteristic of ice breakers. The Mackinaw's orders: Keep the Great Lakes shipping lanes open during the winter months, and assist ships that have been caught in the ice. After decommissioning (2006) the Mackinaw was moved to the pier of the Michigan city whose name she bears. Today, she is a floating museum and open for (scheduled) tours. A very impressive sight to see!
