Summer 2015 in the UK including 'The Open' travel blog

Heather at Buckingham Palace

Monday August 10

After breakfast Barry drove us Redhill railway station (about two miles away) where we took the train into London for the day. Earlier, we had booked tickets online for an exhibition at the Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace, called Art in the Garden.

We disembarked at Victoria Station, then walked towards Buckingham Palace, stopping for breakfast/brunch at a small restaurant. We then picked up our tickets at the Gallery and went for a walk around St. Jame's Park. It was a cloudy but warm day, threatening rain.

At 1:15 we entered the Gallery (timed tickets), picked up two audio tour devices and spent the next two hours learning about the history of the garden in art. It was a very interesting exhibition, primarily paintings but some sculpture, pottery and other exhibits. We both enjoyed the exhibition and were pleased that we had managed to fit it into our travels after all (we had learned about the exhibition months ago and had considered going into London on the first day of our trip before driving north).

We caught the 4:02 train back to Redhill and Judy and Barry picked us up at the station. At home we walked into Reigate to do some last minute banking and to buy a bottle of red wine for dinner. Judy had prepared chilli for dinner followed by cheese and biscuits, so red wine was needed!.

Before retiring early, we re-arranged the suitcases for the morning in anticipation of a 7:30 a.m. start to our day.
