We were up, had breakfast and ready to go before 9:00am this morning. We had a good drive through the barren dessert of northern Nevada, stopping at Winnemucca for diesel. We stopped later for lunch at a rest stop. We have noticed that the rest stops in Nevada are spacious and well laid out. This one, Beowawe, was near a river crossing of the Humboldt River. There was a plaque telling of a dispute at this point in the Donner Party where a fight broke out and, missing his protagonist, hit the wife of his enemy. He was killed by the other fellow in revenge and that fellow was kicked out of the expedition. His daughter managed to feed him and somehow he managed to reach California ahead of the main party who were stranded at what is now Donner Pass. He was instrumental in getting a group together to save the remaining members of the Donner Party.
We continued on to Wells where we are for a couple of days. We drove in sunshine today, but ahead we could see dark clouds. We surmised that it was the storm that had passed through the campground last night and that it would continue on and not be a problem to us. We did get set up in dry weather, but soon after the rain started and then a severe thunderstorm hit and the rain poured down. Our truck and trailer have both badly needed a wash, so hopefully this will clean them up somewhat!
When there was a brief respite in the rain, the mountains became clear again...and there were patches of snow on them!
The rain continued. We had dinner then caught up on emails, etc. WiFi here is good, for the first time at a campground since we left Bandon. It has been passable in places, and impossible in others - and non-existent last night.
Tomorrow will be dependent on the weather, but we hope to see a little of Wells. We have passed through it a few times, but this is the first time we have stopped.
