On the Road Again-MacRea's RV adventures travel blog

5/10 - 5/17/15

Drove across the street to the Mammoth Lake Welcome Center to check on Tioga Pass…still closed. Onward on Hwy 395N to Lee Vining. The ranger at the Welcome Center told us to stop at the Mobile gas station in Lee Vining for the best view of Mono Lake and good food. We did and the view and food was great. We missed the turnoff to Mono Lake and decided to go back to see the tufas…a nice outing. The temp out of Mammoth Lake as we were driving was in the low 70s…a pleasant change from the low 20s.

After a long day of driving, we arrived at the Gold Ranch Casino & RV resort late in the day and checked in. We decided to make this RV resort our base camp for a week. This RV resort is across the street from Hwy 80, exit 2. The train runs parallel to 80, so the noise is quite loud. We would not stay here again.

Weather: this week was full of changing weather, from bright sunshine and blue skies to rain, to snow on the mountaintops.

Eats: Sierra Café at the RV Park…skip it. Beto’s (Mexican)…ok for a family run restaurant; very reasonable prices. Pho 777 Vietnamese…good. Atlantis, Bristro Napa, for the Happy Hour…everything 50% off…a very good deal and the food was excellent; highly recommended. Crawfish Asian Cuisine (at Airport Square by Costco)…all the plates were huge and tasty; a bit expensive. Rapscallion…the food was good, the atmosphere was intimate, but the service was poor, & it was a bit pricey unless you go for the 3 course deal Mon-Sat from 5-6:30 pm. It includes a glass of wine, soup or salad, entrée, & dessert.

After a week here, we are ready to return to San Francisco, CA.
