Pretty Damn Nice! travel blog

Our first stop traveling north is in Visalia in the Central Valley of California. The only reason we stop here is because my younger brother and his family live nearby.

--

We took Hwy 46/41 across from the coast to Visalia. Once again, it was a pleasant drive and the road is in excellent condition. We noticed how brown the hills were on this trip compared to two weeks ago. The north sides of the hills are still showing some green, but the rest is brown and very dry.

We stay in Visalia at the KOA. It is a nice park with lots of trees and drying grass. The managers remembered us from last year. Their water situation is dire and we told them that we had filled our tanks on the coast just in case. This is the only park where we have ever received a warning not to drink the water.

--

It smells bad here. We noticed the smog as we came down out of the hills into the Valley and then the smell started. To me it smells like chemicals, probably from all the farming. There are hundreds of acres of trees and grapes, all needing precious water. And all being sprayed with some kind of chemicals most likely.

--

And to top it off, my brother won't be home this entire weekend, so our visit will be short... just a few hours before we leave on Tuesday. What's that saying about best laid plans?

--

It is hot here too. The sun has gone down and it is still 80 degrees. The weather guessers are saying that this uncommon heat for this time of year will end this coming Sunday. We sure hope so. Otherwise, it is going to be a long summer.

--

We watched weather reports tonight that show hardly any snow pack in the Sierras. We can barely see the Sierra Nevada Mountains from Visalia through the smog. There is some snow up there, but not much. That snow pack is California's water for the rest of the year. Looks like a lot of people will be drinking their pool water. I remember growing up in Fresno when we could see the beautiful mountains with lots of snow as the sun set and turned them all pink. But that was before the smog.

We will look for something to keep us busy this weekend . . . or not. We have a treasure trove of jigsaw puzzles now, and we both love doing them.
