Today we left Shimla to travel on The 'Himalayan Queen' or 'Toy Train' narrow gauge railway to Solan. The line runs 97 Km from Kalka to Shimla (completed in 1903. There are 107 tunnels covering 8Km and 969 bridges over 3Km! British engineering!!! At the station we did the local thing and walked on the tracks to see the original steam engine. The railway is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
There was much mayhem sorting out baggage and seating, but our moon-faced, blue-turbaned Sikh ticket inspector was extremely helpful to all. The Chai Wallah & Channa Dahl Wallah hopped on and off at various stations selling their wares. There were magnificent views around every bend & a very friendly atmosphere aboard.
At Solan, we were met again by Raju, then after a short lunch stop we contined by road to Kalka. Back to Delhi on the Shatabdi Express back to Delhi with a good dinner provided on board! The delightful 1 year old Lily is in front of us, she was also on the Toy Train with her parents. A late evening back at the Maidens before we meet our group in the morning. And so to bed!
