Potosi to La Paz, Bolivia (via Oruro)

Today we left the hotel at 8:15am to go to the Potosi bus station down at the bottom of the town. It was fine and cool this morning. We boarded our bus to Oruro as we couldn't go all the way to La Paz on just one bus. We set off at around 9:15am and headed essentially north through dry and cold country - you could see that some lakes had ice around them. The countryside was quite spectacular with high mountains and steep winding roads. We reached Oruro after one brief stop en route at about 2:30pm and it took us about three quarters of an hour to thread our way around all the roadworks in the town and the detours. Finally we arrived at the bus terminal. Oruro is quite ugly but large - not sure what happens here, but for us, we just waited about half an hour and we were on the 4:00pm bus to La Paz, expected to take around 5 hours. All the way to La Paz there were roadworks on the main road on which we were travelling so it was very slow going. Finally we arrived at the bus terminal in La Paz at around 9:00pm, slightly ahead of our schedule, where we were picked up by a minibus and transferred to our hotel where we had stayed on 30th June. We picked up the luggage we had left there when we had stayed before and went to our room. Shortly after, we came down to farewell the friends we had made on this trip - a really nice bunch of people. Then we went out to dinner - service was slow and by the time we got our meal, we were over it really. Then we walked up the hill (huge effort in La Paz) to our hotel and to bed around 12:30am.
