Pretty drive & Hot Springs Craft Festival...
Jun 28, 2014
|Today we made the 45 minute drive to Hot Springs to attend the Main Street Arts & Craft Festival. Our friend Steve Gardner was playing music at the venue & he was 'on' when we arrived, so we sat & enjoyed the pleasant weather, pretty scenery & company of his wife Janet while we listened to his set.
Afterward we strolled around checking out the vendor's wares even though we knew we probably wouldn't purchase much, if anything. We have NO space for new 'stuff', even though we try to adhere to the 'one in, one out' creed. I did get 2 of the 'scrubbie thingies', you girls probably know what I'm talking about. They use them in many ways, washing dishes, scrubbing veggies etc. I plan to scrub my veggies with one & Larry will use the other to work on bugs on the front of the truck & 5'er, as well as the windshield.
Lunch time arrived, so we enjoyed a taco & of course, the obligatory fair funnel cake. We did split it, if that counts for anything! I am trying to watch my diet a bit as my last blood work indicated a rise in some numbers. Larry & I are both very blessed in the health/prescription drug arena & I want to keep it that way. So, white things, processed sugary foods & especially carbs need to be kept at a minimum. And that's really hard for me. I am a carb addict! Pasta, Mexican & Chinese are what I love most. Not so much the desserts. Oh and salt, let's not forget how much I love salty things. Ok, off my soap box now, lol....
After lunch we started for home, with me driving, so I could make the 'quick stops' when I saw something I wanted to photograph. Much easier than me yelling 'stop' at Larry every 5 minutes and making him back up to just the perfect 'spot'. We took our time, stopping to enjoy the playful prairie dogs & watching the buffalo munching and lumbering through the rolling, green hills. There are two very short video clips of the dogs 'chattering' today. Just click on the Movie Clip link above.
I don't think I've ever seen the grasses as tall as they are this year. I told Larry it looks like someone needs to bring a gigantic mower out & ride for days! Unless the prairie dogs were sitting on their dirt home 'entrance' they were able to hide quite easily in the tall grass. We didn't see one pronghorn, which is a bit unusual, and most of the deer were located closer to town as we arrived back home.
Two Friday's a month the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary hosts a steak dinner at the hall & we like to support their effort. We noticed Dick was already there so made a quick stop to say hello & visit with our favorite bartender Jean. She was getting off work in 30 minutes. We intended to run home, change clothes, let Onyx out for a bit & rest for a few minutes before returning for dinner. But while inside the BIGGEST rain, thunder, lightning storm ever hit town & we decided to stay put, have a drink & enjoy dinner before heading home. Good decision! It was raining so hard you couldn't see across the street & water was rushing down the curbs & street. Fortunately, it was short lived and I must say that Custer has an amazing drainage system. In no time at all the curbs were water free as were the streets, other than being wet of course. Amazing! We expected at least a small amount of damage at home and there was none. Happy dance here, can you see me???? LOL We were also concerned about how Onyx would take all of the thunder & lightning, as it was very loud. She was very glad to see us but no more than normal (at least that's what I think :)
PS Today is brother Larry's birthday! Happy Birthday buddy, hope you have a great day. We're thinking about you & just wanted to let you know we'll celebrate when you get here!
It's clear this morning with blue skies & white puffy clouds. Not as warm as usual, around 60 I believe at 10am. But we're expected to hit the mid 70's later today with a chance of another afternoon shower or two. I think we're just gonna hang out & do nothing for today. Maybe read a book. Doesn't that sound good? It does to me :)
