A trip to the Panama Canal and beyond travel blog

Our first meal in Panama

Arrived in Atlanta a couple minutes late but no problems with the connection. At the Delta counter we got return seats from Panama – and we’re on the exit row with more leg room! Then we stopped in a small place and split a fish and chip platter. Actually quite nice.

About 45 minutes before the flight we went to the gate and the plane had already boarded and they were calling standbys. We had no problem getting to our seats but there was a rather large young woman in the window seat who seemed nervous and would randomly say things… But we survived. Watched a couple movies and read on the four hour flight.

Finally in Panama we went through immigration and customs with no problems then entered the lobby with the hoard of people waiting – most with signs. We got through and asked a taxi guy to take us to the hotel – he wanted $33 – I said too much. He said $28 and Minna said $25… and that was OK. We then went upstairs and waited for ten minutes for the taxi – and a new driver.

He did not know the way to the hotel and spoke no English… We finally stopped at another hotel and asked for directions then arrived at the Tryp Panama Centro!

We checked in to a nice room then headed out to el Rey the 24 hour grocery store. Only about four blocks away but an interesting area. Several prostitutes and others but nothing frightening. We looked around the store and there wasn’t too much that was different than the US. We ended up getting some waters for the trip tomorrow and some weird bread thing. Then made our way back through the streets.

At about 11:00 PM we stopped in a café a block or so from the hotel and had some Panamanian Soup – whole chicken thigh and yucca roots with rice and bread. Also got a so so cheese cake and some drinks. But we were tired so back at the hotel and to sleep about 1:00 AM… and we have to get up at 6:00.

Good first day – but long!
