February 26, 2013 Hastings, New Zealand
We were up early this morning and after a tasty breakfast we were off to Taupo on our way to Hastings. We made a couple of stops on the way. One at Huka Falls before we got to Taupo and another at Waipunga Falls between Taupo and Napier.. Huka Falls is quite touristy and is more of a rapid with an amazing amount of water. Waipunga is of the highway a few hundred metres - the kind of place you drive right by unless you're with a local who knows where they are going - but a spectacular waterfall.
Taupo is a neat little town with some rather unique shopping. It is on the shore of a large lake. On the other side of the lake, there is an active volcano that blows every once in awhile. The stretch from Rotorua to Taupo is known for its hot springs, geysers and volcanic activity.
We arrived in the Hawke Bay Area where Napier and Hastings are located mid afternoon. It has quite a spectacular view from the highway out over the town to the Bay. We went straight to the build site in Hastings arriving at three o'clock. The house we will work on is nearly framed. We met the family we are building for - Lavina, Adam, Watde (17), Adam (13), and Emanuella (7ish?). They are originally from Africa although Emanuella was borne in NZ so they've been here awhile. Lovely people.
After having tea with them and their neighbours who live in a Habitat home behind where we will build, we checked in at the motel that will be home for the next twelve days. It is very basic but clean and comfortable enough. After a trip to the grocery store for breakfast supplies and wine and beer, we were off to a Thai restaurant and then back to the motel to get ready to build tomorrow.
Off to bed now. I will add some photos when I get them sorted out.
