The Pacific Coast

A lovely day. It was a great day for our scenic drive on the Pacific Coast Highway around the north-east corner of the island. We are now at a place called Te Araroa in the East Cape. It took 4.5 hours (with a 30 minute lunch break) to drive the 200 km from Whakatane. The road is very windy and the speed limit is often 35 kph, sometimes 25 kph. In places the road is only one lane and there are several one-lane bridges. But that is ok. It was a day to enjoy the scenery and it was a good day for that.

There is a nice campground directly on the beach but it was full. The one we are at is not so great but it will do for one night. It would have been nice to be on the beach, especially at the cape to keep an eye out for pelagic (ocean-going) birds. The holiday season will be finished on Monday and we should have less problem with full campgrounds. This is the last weekend of the holiday and the weather is nice so many people are camping. The children on still on holidays until the end of January so it might be crowded on the weekends for a few weeks more.

We are half way around the cape and will drive the other half tomorrow.
