|Fraser Island: 24 - 26 October 2012
Bogged, Bogged and Triple Bogged!
We were warned that the hardest part of the trip would be getting across the soft sand on the mainland to catch the car ferry across to Fraser Island and they weren't wrong.
Within 50 metres of leaving the tar road we were well and truly bogged with the camper trailer acting like an anchor.
The 1st people to come to our rescue tried to snatch us out but unfortunately we didn't get very far.
With lots of shovelling (by Sean) and 2 more 4WD's hooked up for a double snatch we were finally pulled cleared.
Sean was exhausted with blisters on his blisters but I loved the photo opportunity!
Once on Fraser Island we thought we were home and hosed only to discover that we had to get up a sand hill to get into Dilli Village where we were camping for 3 nights.
Yes you guessed it, bogged again. The manager of the campsite, Barry, came to our rescue and with 3 snatch straps was able to pull us through the soft sand & up the hill. We FINALLY made it!
Barry reassured us that everyone was getting bogged, even the 4WD Adventure buses, as the sand was extremely soft due to very little rain.
Travelling around the Island was much easier & less stressful without the camper trailer in tow. We drove up to see the famous Maheno Shipwreck, travel inland to the freshwater "perched" lakes and tried our luck at beach fishing.
Alot more confident and prepared to gun it more, we were successful getting off the Island without getting bogged.
Sean was glad to be back on the tar road, happy to say goodbye to Fraser Island.
Next time we will be leaving the camper trailer behind!!!!!
