We left our campground with strange weather. It was raining hard at times but the sun was also out. The forecast for the day was not looking good. We were headed to the ferry but had a stop to make at the historic Cape Hatteras Light House. And guess what? The skies cleared! The light house has been moved from it's original location which was being encroached by the sea. This was a point of contention back in 1999 but all is forgiven now (mostly) and the spot where it stands (along with the keeper's house) should be good for a hundred years or so. The exhibits in the keeper house taught us something we had never heard of. In WWII a large number of US ships were sunk by German U Boats of the coast of the Outer Banks. For a couple of months the Germans were sinking a boat a day. How come we didn't know this from history? Then we hit the 20 minute free ferry to Ocracoke Island. This place is great and a return trip is being planned. We got a campsite at the National Seashore Campground with my Golden Age Pass ($11.50) put out some chairs and headed into the town of Ocracoke. This quaint village is right on the water and we explored it on our bikes on what was a beautifully warm day with the highs near 80. One highlight was the Ocracoke light house. It was very pretty. Then we came across a nature preserve. What a find. We took a beautiful walk through the woods and ended up on the bay for a walk along the beach. For dinner we picked up some fresh flounder for Shirley and shrimp for me. The weather was just incredible and we were able to both cook out and eat on our picnic table. Another great day. Enjoy the pics.
