Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada, October 2-5

|South Lake Tahoe, California, October 2-5
When Frank was working, he once had a conference in Reno, only some 40 miles from Lake Tahoe. We were unable to make the short trip because at that time, we couldn’t afford it. Well, we made it a point to visit Lake Tahoe on this trip to make up for that close miss back then. Turns out we spent the money we didn’t have back then and a bit more here. And it was too bad because the place was gorgeous.
The ride from San Francisco was not long but as we have encountered in so many places in the West, we had to climb to some pretty high ground. The Lake, similar to the lake in Yellowstone sits at pretty high elevations, something like 6,000 plus ft. The RV was doing fine till about 30 miles out..we could feel that all cylinders weren’t firing. We disconnected the car and Anita drove the car those last miles.
The town of South Lake Tahoe was very small. We found a mobile repairman but he did not have the diagnostic equipment to check the motor and referred us to a shop downtown. We made an appointment for the next day. It got a bit more interesting the next day.
We arrived to the shop without incident. It was an auto shop so did not have the open spaces that RV places have so Frank stopped the coach just outside the entrance. He got off and spoke to the manager who directed Frank to locate the coach just in front of all of his three car bays. Frank got in the coach and noticed the starter would not crank. On the third try, it turned over and Frank positioned the coach where told. We gave the shop our cell phone and took off to sightsee.
We were taking pictures of beautiful Lake Tahoe, just a few miles away when the phone rang. The mechanic asked us to return. We hate it when mechanics say that. Frank did not ask, just got in the car and drove back.
Turns out the coach would not turn on under any circumstances. He thought Frank might have some trick button that might do the trick..Frank had no magic tricks. Starter was shot. So, there was no starter in nearby California. They found one that would be delivered the next day.
So we now had earned another day in Tahoe but we would need a hotel. Remember we told you about a mobile RV repairman? Turns out he knew some people at a nearby casino and he had a discount coupon. He was very gracious and personally got us a room on the penthouse floor of the Mont Bleu Hotel and Casino. We got it for $29.00 believe it or not. It was really nice and was only the second time we had left the RV. And we could not stay in the RV repair place first because it was parked pretty crooked. To use the stabilizers, you need to turn on the motor..couldn’t do that. Also, there was a small matter of bears frequenting the area..yes, we stayed in the hotel that night.
We stayed in the crooked coach the next day waiting for the part. At around 4:00 PM, Frank began looking for another hotel because the part had not arrived. He was on the phone when a van showed up with the part. The shop guys hung around till the part was installed. They also had found the issue in the motor..it was a coil to the spark plug..they changed that and the spark plug and voila…We raced back to the campground and escaped lovely Lake Tahoe the next day..
