|Another fabulous day here in rainy Newport Rhode Island. It just spit again yesterday so it didn't interfere with our plans to see 3 more mansions. It is just incredible that these wealthy of wealthies used these homes for just 10-12 weeks a year in the late 1800's and early 1900's. They were all in the same social set and vied for the best dates for their dinner parties and dances. Everyone had a ballroom and 600 people would come for the dance. Interestingly enough, most of the mansions that still stand were built after other older mansions were torn down by the owners to build new ones. We purchased a ticket that let us see any 5 of the 12 mansions that are owned by the historic preservation society. There are many others on the same road but are still privately owned. We took a tour of the many fascinating and diverse neighborhoods in this relatively small town with gobs of money. Next we drove along the shore to Ft.Adams which secured the harbor during the colonial days. There is a two mile multi purpose trail that would be great for biking (Don and Jeanne) and the scenery is fantastic. We came back and spent the evening in the camper. We have been in Newport on this trip 4 days and nights and have not seen it all. I think it would take a good week so we'll be back. Raining now and it's get away day so we may get wet. We will head to Church not far away then hit the road to Connecticut. Enjoy the pics.
