Tuesday September 18

We began the morning preparing the trip journal before heading off to Tony and Leah’s home for a cup of tea and to pick up Robert for the day. It was yet another bright sunny day, interrupted by one or two quick showers. We drove into Wrexham town centre where Robert and Heather grew up, and after a few misses with the one-way streets, parked in the town centre near St. Giles church to begin our walkabout.

For Robert and Heather, the stroll along the town was a time for reminiscing. They were constantly remarking on which shops had changed, which buildings are new, which market areas were the still going strong and “What used to be there?” or “That hasn’t changed a bit!”.

We stopped for lunch at the Horse and Jockey pub which is the only thatched pub in down town Wrexham; it was exactly the same on the outside as it had been over 40 years ago!

We had our afternoon coffee at the Village Bakery (and coffee shop) which had recently been updated, then following a circuitous drive around the local countryside dropped Robert back at Tony and Leah’s place.

At six-thirty we picked Robert up again for dinner with cousin Glyn, his wife Diane and son Michael and cousin Steven and Linda. We headed for an Asian restaurant in Caergurle where we had eaten with them on a previous trip. The food was great: a crispy duck appetizer followed by a selection of dishes ranging from sweet and sour chicken to a triple hot curry, each dish selected by one of us.

Again, it was nice to hear news from another side of the family. We hope one day they might visit us in Canada. We had not been able to see Heather’s Uncle Towyn and Aunt Faith (Glyn and Steven’s parents) this time because Towyn was ill. It was past 11:00 p.m. by the time we dropped Robert at Tony and Leah’s and we returned to our hotel.
