We spent a night in Townsville, awaiting our boat to Magnetic (or 'Maggie' as the locals would call it-for anyone who hasn't been to Oz, they will just about shorten any word they possibly can!) Island. Townville was pretty lively, much more pleasant than the industrial town as described by the book. We visited the town museum and learned all about the S.S. Yongala, which we had just dived. We then headed to Magnetic Island which we explored in a day on bikes which was very pretty but fairly quiet. We did a quick walk up to the World War 2 look out posts positioned on this island to help Townsville keep look out-apparently very effective they were too!
