It was a delightful day at Simpson’s Reef – though it was cloudy in Bandon, evidently all day, the sun was shining gloriously at Simpson’s Reef, and the wind was all but nonexistent. SO, very soon we shucked our heavy jackets, and before long, I had the SEA sweatshirt tied over my shoulders. It was a perfect day.

A Boy Scout Camporee was being held all along Cape Arago Road. Dressed like pirates, patrols of Scouts walked up and down the few miles moving from station to station. At the station near us, “Barnacle Bill” was checking the boy’s skills in building a litter to carry their bounty, which was very heavy ‘gold.’ The boys were graded on their outfits, their ‘pirate’ speech, and their ability to carry their bounty as they built their litter. The real key to this station was the skill of using a blanket and 2 poles to make a stretcher that could carry a person for a long distance without unraveling. It is a great skill! I went over to watch, and Barnacle Bill awarded me a ‘gold’ pirate doubloon.

After visiting with over 260 people, we went over to Jim and Barb’s camper for dinner. They had prepared Green Chili Stew and corn mush, which was really delicious. We baked a rhubarb-strawberry custard pie for dessert, and we had a delightful evening sharing stories.

When we arrived at home, we unloaded the government car at our place, drove it to the maintenance lot and then walked home and took the key to Les and Pam so they could use the car tomorrow.
