Roxby Downs

Historical settlement info Andamooka

First tri level in Austalia ???

2nd May

Today we travelled to Roxby Downs 77 kms. from Woomera.

"The population is 4,500 and was built in 1988 to support the BHP Billiton Mine. They mine copper, uranium, gold and silver. We enjoyed morning tea and a walk around the town.

Olympic Dam is the largest underground mine in Australia and was named after a man made dam built to provide water for livestock. The dam was built in 1956 and named after the Olympic games in the same year. (Melbourne)" (source info centre brochure)

Unfortunately you can only see the dam by organised tour.

From Roxby Downs we ventured further to Andamooka. This is an opal mining town with historic buildings and shacks. Ugly but interesting.
