|We drove a whole 35 miles north to Key Largo and without reservations stopped into John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. I was third in line and we got in! The reservation system said they were full but I overheard the rangers saying they keep a few spots open daily on a first come first served basis. We had planned to snorkel the reef but it has been very windy and both snorkel and scuba were called off for the second day in a row. The weather was still beautiful and we made the most of it. We biked a few miles and walked all three trails in the park. We went to the visitor's center which has a 300,000 aquarium. We also saw an excellent film on the many aspects of the reef. We are booked to snorkel today but they are going to let us know if it is too windy again. Don't know if we are staying tonight. I could only book for one night and the ranger said come up in the morning to see if there is another opening. If not, we can use the park all day without paying the day fee. This is an excellent park, albeit a little pricey at $43. PS Today is my brother Glenn's 55 birthday. Happy b'day Glenn. Enjoy the pics.
