Approaching the island

Is that supposed to be coming out of the boat's engine?

Deserted beach (except for the cow)

A "floating village"

Another view of the floating village

The one local tourist attraction near Kratie is Koh Trong Island in the Mekong River. According to their brochure, “A 9km loop road around the island's perimeter provides opportunities for visitors to leisurely cycle through traditional Khmer villages, fruit orchards, and rice fields while observing the daily rituals and routines of traditional village like.

Well, it certainly lived up to its claims. If you wanted to see rural Cambodia, you really wouldn't need to look any further. It has everything: stilt houses, farm land, wooded areas, and pristine beaches. There's even a floating village just off shore. (By floating the entire village, they are immune to the annual flooding that causes so many problems here. And, if you wanted to spend the night, they offer homestays.

Even better is what it doesn't have: cars and trucks. There are no roads on the island, just narrow paths for carts, bicycles and a few “motos” (motorcycles).

Today's pictures tell the story better than I could.
