leaving Salt Point State Park - heading south on Highway 1

the drive is a lot prettier when you can see the ocean

that's Fort Ross ahead

this is where the San Andreas Fault goes back out to sea

it follows the shoreline south and comes ashore again at Salmon Creek

15mph feels just about right on this road!

don't want to be going too fast through this curve

from the looks of the guard rail someone tried it

Labor Day traffic was backed up here on the one lane stretch

that's the mouth of the Russian River ahead

the big rock in the distance is known as Goat Rock

that's a crowd for this stretch of beach

farther south - Salmon Creek also flows to the Pacific

coming into Bodega Bay

one of several kite shops here

the Boat House has the best fish/clams/calamari and chips on the coast

one of Bodega Bay's two groceries

the pink and white building sells salt water taffy (what else?)

Tides Wharf of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Birds' fame

Lucas Wharf

looking across the San Andreas Fault to Bodega Head in the distance

south of Bodega Bay Highway 1 turns inland for a ways

and here the sky finally gets blue

up ahead the left turn to the town of Bodega

Bodega

and famous Saint Theresa of Avila

Monday morning we reluctantly broke camp and headed home. Our drive took us back the same way we came, at least as far as Jenner. But from there we continued down the coast and took the route home through Bodega Bay.

Visibility was good today, and we could see the ocean all the way. In these photos you can see the cliffs on the west side of Highway 1. One mistake and it's a l-o-n-g way down to the water - so we're always glad to get past this stretch when we have to drive this road!
