Ron & Elena's 2011 Travels travel blog

I took this photo late last night when we suddenly had full...

We've noticed these "road marker poles" where they have very heavy snow....

Some views of the scenery during the last part of our drive...

Worthington Glacier.

Chugach Mountains.

The scenery is beautiful but it wasn't a great day for photography.

Bridal Veil Falls in Keystone Canyon.

Horsetail Falls in Keystone Canyon. These names made us feel like we...

(Ron Writing) It was very cloudy again this morning and by afternoon we were having intermittent rain showers. I don’t think we got above 55° today and during the afternoon we had some strong winds that made it feel much colder.

We drove east along the Glenn HW to Glennallen, AK then south onto the Richardson HW and headed for Valdez. It was a nice drive but not nearly as scenic as yesterday until the last 50 miles. As we neared Valdez we were again surrounded by high mountains. We had very nice views of Worthington Glacier, beautiful alpine views as we crossed Thompson Pass, and then down through the very deep and narrow Keystone Canyon with its many waterfalls right beside the highway.

Weather: Overnight low was 45°. Cloudy all day with periods of light rain this afternoon and evening, very windy much of the afternoon, highs in the mid 50’s

Critters: One moose beside the road, couldn’t get a photo.

Mileage: Today - 187 miles, cumulative since leaving AZ on 4-6-11 – 8,334 miles.

Gasoline Price: $4.229/gal in Glennallen, AK

Tonight’s stop: We are spending the night at a paved turnout off the Richardson HW, couple miles north of Valdez, AK, 61.09095, -146.20276, 21’ elev.
