Sorry for the delay, our Internet service has been spotty to say the least. So... We are in the UP (or Yoop as the locals say). But we need to backtrack a bit. Last we left, we were still in the lower part of Michigan, Cheboygan I believe. We left the campground looking for the "new" Great Lakes Ice Breaker. Alas, it was out to....lake. Undaunted, we went Macninaw City and found the ORIGINAL Mackinaw a decommissioned Great Lakes ice breaker. It was better than you could believe! Touring this historic ship was AMAZING!! We then travelled over the Mackinaw Bridge to the UP, yes the Upper Peninsula!! We stopped at Sault Ste. Marie (Sue saint Marie) and watched 3 great lake freighters go through the locks. Saw Lake Michigan from a light house and camped in a Federal Forest for HALF PRICE because I have a Golden Age Pass from someone who is my name too. Then on to Whitefish MI. Whitefish has claimed more shipwrecks and lives than any place in the US. In the mid 1800's there was not the safety we have now and 1300 ships sailed the Great Lakes during the heyday since the Erie Canal was completed. You who are following know about our Erie Canal history. What a sight Whitefish was! An entire complex with the light house, keepers house, ship wreck museum and Edmund Fitzgerald movie. We have a BF'er friend David Root who was a Great Lakes seaman during the time the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. We then (if that wasn't enough) stopped at a cranberry bog. Found out the harvest is in mid October but got the tour of the facility and a nice video. NOW, we are stopping to catch our breath and tomorrow going on a cruise to see the FANTASTIC picture rocks of Lake Superior. We are very much enjoying ourselves... our pics from today will appear tomorrow..however, enjoy these from the not so distant past.
