Today is a travel and hiking day. We will leave our lovely hotel in Colfosco and take several buses to see some of the other nearby passes. It is great fun traveling on these buses, climbing the hairpin turns, barely missing cyclists and motorcyclists, other cars, and forcing some cars to back up often precariously close to the edge so we can get by. Carol got carsick on one windy downhill stretch, but she's actually done better on these roads than she does when I'm driving.
We spent an hour on Pordoi Pass enjoying the views and people, and then caught another bus to Arraba, had lunch there, then another bus to our little hotel 2 km south of Alleghe. We left our bags at the hotel, shouldered our daypacks (well, heavier than daypacks) and our nice hotelier drove us back to Alleghe where we took a lift to our trailhead.
We then climbed about 2000 ft in warm sun with increasingly gorgeous views of surrounding peaks, foremost of which was Pelgo Peak. We arrived at Refugio Coldai at about 5 pm, put down our packs in our dormitory room where we had bunkbeds (long time since we've slept in such) and then had dinner with 2 Scottish couples, both of whom have trekked extensively in the Dolomites. We turned in early hopng for some solid sleep in preparation for a long hiking day tomorrow.
