Pancake Rocks

On Thursday we were planning to drive back to Christchurch across Arthur's Pass through some apparently beautiful scenery, but sadly we were scuppered again by the horrendous weather, the worst in five years according to the locals!

We got within ten kilometres of the pass before being turned back by an unusually unfriendly Kiwi, who told us in no uncertain terms that chains were essential. We turned back along with all the other unprepared chainless people, and headed back to the coast as the closure of the pass basically meant that instead of going over the Alps we had to go around them!

It wasn't all bad though as we were able to stop off at Pancake Rocks which were amazing, and something of a mystery to geologists. The rain even paused while we looked round!

We were going to push on to Nelson but the roads are so winding that getting anywhere takes forever and as it was getting dark we decided to stop in the very unexciting town of Westport. We hid in our motel room and had Chinese takeaway while rain, hail and snow pounded on the roof all night long, perhaps the worst weather we've ever seen!
