Jo explores South America in 2010 travel blog

It is not guaranteed that the mighty Andean condors will be flying so we were up at 5.30am to leave the hotel at 6.30am. The trip to the canyon from the hotel was about 2hrs. Lucky for us there were 4 condors flying when we arrived. They are a very impressive but also a very unattractive bird! Wing span is about 3 metres. Together with the other hundreds of tourists we snapped away with the cameras in an attempt to get the best photos....not sure that I succeeded? The Colca Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon so it was also impressive. The ride in our little bus to the canyon was not on a sealed road so the plan to get some sleep on the journey back did not go to well. All on the bus were exhausted. After a quick lunch in the town of Chivay we were taken back to the hotel for some much needed R & R. Those more energtic went on a horse ride. For me the bed was calling. Feeling somewhat refreshed we headed to the hot thermal baths in the late afternoon. The tourists get their own pool. It was 38 degrees in temperature. Nice at the beginning but too hot after an hour. Dinner followed at a local restaurant which included a band and some dancing by the local people. A good time was had by all. Again the bed was calling. Another early start the next for another bus journey.
