Today we had another early wakeup (5 AM) to catch the 6:15 bus to Wonder Lake. The weather was overcast as we started out and then started looking better later in the morning. Today was a much better day for seeing animals, we saw at least 18 grizzly bears, mainly mothers and cubs (up to 2 years old). One set was within 20 feet of the bus munching away on berries. Today we also saw red fox, wolf and Sheldon sheep. When we got to the Eielson Visitor Center Mt. McKinley was more visible than yesterday but still lots of clouds. We were within 25 miles of the mountain.
After a quick sandwich, it was on to Wonder Lake, which was a little disappointing since we did not see any animals. The unique thing was seeing a glacier that did not look like a glacier, it was black and had growth on top. None the less our guide pointed out where it had recently calved. Where we had been in tundra with little trees this area had a lot more trees and lakes left from the glaciers. We were not there very long and I would say the best trip is to Eielson and the trip to Wonder Lake is really not worth the bus ride and extra cost. It was a long day and we are both tired. I plan to try and sleep in (at least until 6AM). Mike fixed chili tonight since it is colder than it has been. Tomorrow we pack up and head for Fairbanks and our over night stop is planned to be Chena Hot Springs. Then probably one day to explore Fairbanks and an Alaskan salmon bake with halibut.
The weather has cleared and it is now sunny. The clear weather did not last long.
