Great Alaska Adventure travel blog

Last night was colder than the previous night. Inside temperature was 50 deg this morning. Anne was a little cold overnight, but I was comfortable.

We had an early wake up this morning (0520) in order to make a 0630 shuttle bus going to the Eilson visitors center. The bus has been upgraded from a typical school bus that Dad and I rode in 1984.

We had a lot of wildlife sightings on the way to Eilson: moose; bear; ptarmagin; caribou; and Dahl sheep. We had a really got look at a mama bear and two cubs and got to watch the cubs play and frolic for a few minutes and then all 3 crossed the road just behind our bus.

We had our lunch at Eilson and did a short loop hike. We started up the scenic path but at 25% grade, I decided that I did not want to work that hard today.

The “Mountain is out“, at least partially. The skies cleared somewhat and we got a nice, but only partial view of Denali with a good view of the right side of the mountain. Unfortunately, the summit was still obscured by clouds.

The bus ride back was uneventful except for a small herd of caribou that we observed in the lake bed (about 35).

We got back to the Wilderness Access Center and got a refund on our park entrance fee since we have the national park senior card. We also signed up for the shuttle to Wonder Lake for tomorrow. The weather forecast is good so hopefully we will have a good view of Denali tomorrow.

A reminder for all of our friends that have hit their 62nd birthday - buy the National Park senior card - for $10 for a lifetime card. This card provides free entrance to all national parks, monuments, and forests and a 50% discount on other services (e.g. camping). Our camping at Denali in an RV is only $14/night.
