Happy Campers at Crater Lake

The final planning for our first RV adventure and our first RV trip to Alaska is complete. All of the airline, hotel, and rental car reservations needed to get us to Anchorage to pick up our RV at Great Alaskan Holidays have been completed.

Itinerary is to head north toward Denali. We have 3 nights reserved at Riley Creek campground at Denali and have our tour reserved. Due to some uncertainty in what time we will actually get the RV, we do not have the first night locked in - options are Eklutna Lake if we get started late or Byers Lake at Denali State Park if we get away early enough. Alaska state fair is going at Palmer, so we may have some trouble finding a campground for the first night.

After the 3 days at Denali, the current plan is to move to Fairbanks for one or two days, then down the Richardson Highway to Glennallen. At that point, we will make the decision on whether to go to Valdez or not. If not, we head back to Anchorage for restocking and then on to Williwaw campground at Portage Glacier to start 5 or 6 days on the Kenai. We plan to visit Seward and Homer. One of my high priority items is to kayak. We have found a couple of full day kayak outings from either Homer or Seward.

Since this is our first RV adventure, we are not really sure how to prepare. Anne is making her shopping lists for our stops at Walmart and Sam's to stock the RV with food and goodies. Of course some adult beverages will be included.

I have been studying guide books, web links and other resources to prepare for the trip. I will update with some details on resources and references later.

During our planning preparations, I have discovered TripIt ( TripIt is a service (free) that can process all of your individual airline, hotel, rental car reservations and create one integrated itinerary which you can keep as private or share with friends. Create an account at TripIt then forward your confirmation emails to and your integrated itinerary is prepared.
