We left 1000 Islands on a beautiful sunny day, and stopped to see some friends from our golf club in Florida who winter at the home in Lowville, NY, Sue & Chip Virkler. They have a beautiful place and I can see why it is their "real" home, having grown up in the area and having alot of family and friends around. We had a great lunch and then were treated to a tour of their little town; it made us remember how nice it is to be somewhere where you know everyone and always know where you're going - something we haven't experienced much this year.
We headed south from there and set up camp in Verona, NY at Turning Stone Resort & Casino. It has 2 beautiful golf courses but we had other things on our agenda for our short visit to this area. We headed over to Rome, NY to visit a new National Landmark, Fort Stanwix. They wanted to rebuild the fort in it's original position which is right in the middle of downtown, so rerouted the main road through downtown and built a beautiful reconstruction.
We were right near Clinton, NY which is where Buzz grew up, so we went over and did a nice walking tour of the downtown square. It is the typical small village with a town square complete with bandstand and shops that have been there for many years. Buzz could remember most of them as they were, and was glad to see they were still maintained. Hamilton College is on the hill above the town and they have a great garden area which we walked - Suzie loved it.
That night, we went up to Sylvan Beach on Lake Oneida, which Buzz remembered going to with his Mom & Dad when he was about 8. He was a little disappointed, as it had looked alot bigger to him then and showed some signs of age. But we did all the things you're supposed to do at an amusement park- rode the bumper cars, had ice cream, and watched the sunset over the lake.
From here we are heading over to Lake George, NY for a few days with my parents before our family reunion at the lake with the whole family - 26 of us! We try to do this at least every 2 years and we all thoroughly look forward to it. Buzz will be in Canada this week for a presentation for a project up there, and then it will be sit back and enjoy. The next you hear from us will probably be around the 8th of August, but don't think we're done - there's lots more travel ahead!
