McLeod Family Trip 2010 travel blog

Friday May 7

Nic had her day off today so nice to spend time with her and Sophie exploring Newbury.Another quaint little English town set on a very picturesque canal.Boys and Sophie had a blowout in the park before walking along the riverbanks of the canal, past the lock and into the main street where low and behold we discovered another West Cornwall Pasty Shop.Yay!We chanced upon this great shop in Bath thanks to Morag and Blacky, devine Cornish pasties smuggled in from Cornwall…yum, yum, yum me hearties.Kids loved the pirate theme and the pasties.Had a warm spot looking out at the canal.Canal boat past right beside us so it was up onto the riverbank and along to the lock to watch how it all worked.Fascinating how they open the lock gates and alter the water level so they can exit at a higher level.Boys had a great time helping the boat owners-holding ropes, winding gates and generally doing anything they were asked to.Some great photos and their help was most appreciated.Back past another park where Ross joined us (he had made the most of our down day to update and fix up our trip journal.Few things missing,/ out of sequence (sorry!)also added a few more photos.Has been a bit of a challenge at times finding time to write and getting affordable internet access.Apologies if we seem a bit slow replying to emails. We love hearing from you!Back home for a cup of tea and re-fuel then round the corner to neighbourhood reserve where a NZ vs. England soccer game took place with some local lads. NZ ( McLeod boys won 12 - 11, although we did keep being penalized for hand ball.) Everyone shook hands at the end. The pommys were exhausted. That was fun. Packed up our gear ready for an early start tomorrow.Dinner then off to Downe House School (for very wealthy girls) where they were performing Mary Poppins for the opening of their Music/Arts Festival weekend.A fantastic show.Outstanding leads.Perfectly cast great acting and gorgeous singers.Lots of talent at this school.Lucky to get invited…thanks Nic and Tony!Back home for our last night at the Riddles.Has been so much fun staying with Nic,Tony and Sophie. They have been incredibly good to us..feeding us delicious meals, giving us unlimited use of washing machine/computer,lending us GPS and maps, helping plan our trips, giving us gear for generous and hospitable we have been very lucky.Nice to finish each day with a glass of wine and fun conversation. We will miss them!
