Where in the USA is the CoCo Locomoto? travel blog

Is it an apple or a rock?

A cool frog siting on a pile of rocks or a rock...

An artichoke field in the desert.

Driving between Perris and Lake Elsinore, CA one day we saw these rocks and just had to stop and see someone's creativity! How many of you would have seen an apple and a frog like this artist did? We sure wouldn't have but thought they were fun to share. Now for answers to some of the questions we asked in the last few blogs. In the last blog about the beach, we asked how many creatures can you name that live in the ocean at low tide. Just some of the things you might have thought of are: starfish, clams, crabs, anemones, sea urchins, sea slugs and mussels. What causes low tide? Tides are created because the Earth and the moon are attracted to each other, just like magnets are attracted to each other. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth to bring it closer. But, the Earth is able to hold onto everything except the water. Since the water is always moving, the Earth cannot hold onto it, and the moon is able to pull at it. The Earth makes one complete turn every 24 hours. The side of the Earth that is facing the moon is where it is high tide. That is where the moon is pulling at the water. Since the Earth is spinning, the area that the moon is pulling at changes. That is why the tides change. If you are at the beach, and the moon is pulling on the ocean there, it will be high tide. If the moon is pulling at the ocean somewhere else, then it will be low tide at the beach where you are. We also talked about the San Juan Capistrano Mission. The reason the Mission is so popular for the swallows is that it is situated between 2 rivers which provides LOTS of insects for them to eat and provides lots of protection for the baby swallows. The swallows arrive every year on March 19th and leave every year on October 23rd! Spanish Missionaries grew mostly wheat and corn and had lots of sheep and cattle for food. Dates are great... What were some ideas that you came up with to use dates? DID you guess muffins, cookies, cakes, breads, stuffing them with walnuts for a tasty treat, salads, desserts and of course milk shakes and just eating them as a snack. Most of the water for irrigation comes from the Colorado River which is diverted by the Imperial Dam. The groves have to be flooded every 7-14 days in the summer because they require the equivalent of 100 inches of rain each year and they only get an average of 5 inches per year in that area of the desert.
