Barb & Dave's Trip to the South Pacific travel blog

December 10

We got up to beautiful sunshine and warm temps this morning. We then met Pete at a cafe in downtown Wanaka. We caught up on old times and then he suggested an itinerary and activities for the next few days. Emma joined us for coffee as we got ready for our day. The first was to go up to the Rob Roi Glacier and watch the icebergs break off. However, that plan fell through because the road was washed out from the rain last night. We will try to do it when we come back. We then set out for the east coast. Pete told us to stop in Ophir outside Omakau and go to an old English teahouse. Unfortunately, it has been closed for a couple of years because the ladies got too busy and couldn’t handle it. We did like the old bridge coming into the village and the old buildings. Then it was on the road again. We got to the coast and stopped in a place called Moeraki Pt. The campground was on the ocean but now it was cloudy and cooler. There are some big boulders here (Pete can’t have moved these) which we will look at tomorrow. There is a little restaurant in the village we went to for dinner. They catch the fish daily so it is really fresh seafood and Barb tried the Bluecod. It was too fishy. Dave had the Warehou and it was good. Then we came back for coffee and chocolate. We watched the water as it got choppier and the clouds continued to roll in.
