|If your going to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World, there is no better way than to do it except... perfect. A special way to spend a day on the Great Barrier Reef is with your family. Of course we would have loved to have spent it with all family and friends, but I haven't checked the lotto tickets yet. The truly only thing missing to make it a perfect day was Spence.... Hope you had a good day working Spence. We left Cairns and got on Board the ship, sat at the back of the ship in lounge chairs and sailed out to the Great Barrier Reef with the sun basking our Golden tanned bodies. OK, my white fat ass, but it didn't sound as glamorous. The ride was about 1 hours to Green Island, that is located in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef and according to experts - one of the worlds most famous spots on the reef. The island is truly paradise. If we ever get the pictures up and running you'll agree, but in the mean time, check out the web sites for Green Island. It truly is special. Anyway, we got off the boat at Green Island for 4 hours and the real excitement began. Sheldon decided that he wanted to go para-sailing. So he and Alana, got strapped into the harness and went for a para-sail over the Great Barrier Reef. Sheldon was as white eyed as the surf and Alana couldn't believe she was a couple hundred ft in the air para-sailing around and over the reef. WHAT A VIEW. Dad decided the best way to relax on the most famous island in the world was to have a beer and relax. A lot of stress goes on in this Queensland. Mom and I walked around the whole island. Believe it or not, 80% of our walk around the island we never saw a single person. We were truly on a special island, by ourselves. It really is a Wonder of the World. But as it is, all good things they must come to an end. As Mom and I were about 300ft from completing our walk around the island, there is a helicopter pad on the beach. You can go around it or under it. We went under it. Mom...so engrossed with the beauty of the reef, lifted her head and miss-judged a ramp beam and smacked her head. As Sheldon would say " Grandma said bad words". Mom looked like she was in a WWF cage match. The towel was soaked with blood. After we finished the walk....yes she was a trooper and finished, we then attended 1st aid, it turned out to be a small cut. She looked like she finally belonged in Richmond...She had a red dot on her forehead. She got over it, the cut cleaned up, Sheldon and Alana on the ground. We thought it couldn't get better, but we were way wrong. We got back onto the boat and headed out another 1 1/2 to the Great Barrier Reef. We docked on a pontoon for the rest of the day. As soon as we docked we were given a world class first rate lunch, including all the sea food, and ET all. After lunch we headed onto the main level of the pontoon and got our scuba and snorkel gear. Sheldon led the way eager and full of anticipation. Well to our delight and surprise, he dawned his mask, fins, snorkel and headed out to the open water and snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef like he was Jacques Cousteau. Before I could turn around, Alana was all geared up and heading out to view the coral, reefs, fish and the very special world call the Great Barrier Reef. After snorkeling for a long while, we got out for a break and refreshments. Poppa, Grandma, Alana, Sheldon, then went on a submarine that went onto the reef floor and explored the reef up close and personal. I sat on the deck and fell asleep....apparently that might not have been a wise idea. It was about 46 degree. They returned from the oceans bottom. I went back out to the coral reef. I have to admit that it got the best of me as I was totally entranced and got lost in the under water world. What a place. I was finally summoned onto the pontoon as the time and tranquility got the better of me. The sun was shinning at about 46 degree, Green Island a world class Island of paradise, Mom and I had a great walk around the island. Sheldon, Alana snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, Sheldon and Alana para-sailed over the reef. Submarines on the reef floor... All in all, I guess it can go down on the calender as a good day. Back onto the boat and headed back home we left, with a stop on Green island to pick up some passengers. We sat in the back of the boat on the outside deck with the sun and wind in our faces. The day was topped of with Poppa having a beer...the stress of the reef got to him, Mom, Sheldon having a pop, and Alana all having a toast and refreshments as we sailed into the sunset and back to Cairns. Just a note to all of you, when they say the sun is intense and hot in Cairns and the barrier reef because the hole in the ozone.....Believe them. I looked like the little girl in the 1960 commercial for suntan lotion. I had a very white ass and was extremely burnt.I should have listened to my bikini clad wife and put on sunscreen. OK go ahead and laugh now you....insensitive people. Because this is where I tell you that an extreme sunburn on the Great Barrier Reef is a lot better than shoveling snow in Edmonton at -25. I can justify anything. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the 7 Wonders off the World...And now we can tell you first hand that it well deserves that distinction.
