Thursday, 8-20-09 - Hubbard Glacier

Today we didn't stop at any port, we sailed to Yakutat and Disenchantment Bay to see Hubbard Glacier. Hubbard Glacier stretches 76 miles to the sea from it's source on Mount Logan in the Yukon territory, and is the longest tidewater glacier on the North American continent with an open calving face of over 6 miles wide. It stands approximately 250-300 feet high!!

When we were approaching it, I couldn't even see that there was another cruise ship sitting in front of it. The cruise ship RCCL's Radiance of the Seas is a larger ship and it looked tiny sitting in front of it. I was taking a picture when I finally realized that there was a ship there. I couldn't even see it at first.

Hubbard is a beautiful glacier with a lot of calving and noise. It sounds like gun shots, cracking, or thunder and once in a while you see some calving where a big chunk of ice falls into the sea. It's really awesome to see. Since I had seen it last year I didn't think I would take many pictures, but after it was all said and done, I had taken quite a few!

The rest of the day was spent with a nap (my folks), meeting up with a friend for "tea" and then I went to a movie. We met another couple later tonight who had just retired from the post office in May. They worked at headquarters in D.C.

Need to get to bed....have to be up by 5AM !!!! UGH!!

Tomorrow....Seward (with a trip to Anchorage).
